Presentation Grade Civil War M1850 Foot Officer's Sword. 37" overall with 30 1/2" blade bearing classic period etched decoration, including profuse floral/scroll work, arms panoply, and American eagle in the center with etched motto above, on the obverse, and similar decoration, with large US, in the center of the reverse. There are two small oval proof marks on the obverse ricasso. Blade really excellent retaining much original luster, with just a few minor stains and absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. Regulation style hilt perfect with nice patina which includes the important addition of a full body spread wing eagle cast integral with the pommel cap with matching patina. Sharkskin grip perfect, along with the twisted brass wire wrap. Oddly, the scabbard, while all there, is neatly broken into three pieces. Obviously readily restorable. One small dent on the reverse of the middle mount, else the mounts are perfect with patina matching the hilt. Interestingly, the block letters "C. L. J., obviously period, are engraved at the top of the lower mount on the front. The leather is quite sound, although with some minor flaking, but again readily restorable. An attractive and interesting Civil War foot officer's sword.
