Pillow Pommel American Officer's Saber By Lemuel Wells C. 1810. 1 1/2" wide, 29" curved blade excellent. Decorated for half its length with engraved floral and military motifs, including on the obverse, floral and geometric decoration, a primitive trucked wing eagle with engraved motto in riband above, and riband engraved in script "L. Wells & Co. / Warranted" with a large "G" stamped on the ricasso. The reverse of the blade incorporates floral/scroll decoration with arms panoply including liberty cap. The blade retains 90% of the original fire blue and traces of the gilt highlighting on the decoration. The balance of the blade generally bright and clean with just a few small dark areas with salt and peppering, minor. The all brass hilt retains 80% of the original gilt and is decorated with five balls on both the knucklebow and the outboard branch, disc quillon. Multistep pillow pommel with capstan. Square ivory grip with vertical incised line decoration with a 1/2" square chip on the left side at the pommel and two minor age hairlines, but very sound with nice mellow patina. Lemuel Wells & Co. is first listed in New York in 1799. A very pretty American sword and especially desirable marked by this early maker.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
