    Description

Very Rare, Likely British, But Possibly American, Naval Dirk, Featuring Reptilian/Alligator Motif. First example noted. 17" overall with flat, curved 12 3/4" blade with engraved floral and military motifs. Generally smooth gray patina with just a few small darker areas with some salt and peppering. All brass hilt featuring a reptilian pommel with delineated scales. Brass chain guard. Flat S shaped cross guard with disc finials and a single outward branch with a full figure alligator / crocodile inside, with scales and teeth delineated. Hilt overall about perfect retaining traces of the original gilt. Checkered and carved ivory grip also about perfect with nice mellow patina. Possibly British with a direct reference to The Nile Campaign or American with reference to American Naval activity in the southeastern US. Either way a remarkable Naval dirk in nice untouched condition.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
