    Description

Very Nice Civil War U.S. M1852 Naval Officer's Sword with Inscription. As pointed out in the introduction, while this is a very nice absolutely authentic Civil War period sword, we are of the opinion the inscription was applied during the post Civil War period.

Very fine, near mint, 29" blade, just some minor staining toward the tip, else about perfect, bright and clean. Standard period Horstmann etch The obverse displaying a panoply of arms including flag with "U.S.N.", oval of stars, fouled anchor with US shield and "W. H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia" in the blade etch at the base. Reverse with rope with acorns and oak leaves, "USN" in riband, fouled anchor and tucked wing eagle seated on naval cannon. King's head proof on the reverse ricasso. The hilt is pure regulation style and about perfect retaining most of the original gilt. White rayskin grip and spring like copper wire wrap perfect.

Sharkskin scabbard excellent just showing the slightest signs of wear. All regulation style mounts also about perfect with absolutely no dents and retaining much of the original gilt. Separately affixed brass scroll on back of top mount with Horstmann logo. Inscribed in script on the top mount above the ring mount "Presented to / Cmdr D. Lynch / U. S. N. / U. S. S. Bainbridge". Dominick Lynch entered the US Navy in 1835 and remained in service through his commission as Commander on July 21, 1861 commanding the Brig Bainbridge. He remained in service throughout the war, was commissioned a Captain in March 1867 and retired in 1872. Again, we are of the opinion the inscription is, in fact, of the post Civil War period. Accompanied by records.
