    Description

Unique Whaleship Metacom Scrimshaw and Vertebrae Cane.
This hand-crafted cane was produced by a crew member of the whaler Metacom (launched in 1841, sank off Pago Pago 1860). It is 32 ½-inches long. The solid 2-inch in diameter round knob handle has scrimshawed decorations of the "Ship Metacom 1842", two whales and the North Star. There is a bone ferrule with four turnings. The shaft is an iron rod onto which eighty-five fish vertebrae have been threaded. Each has three holes where colored wax has been poured in. It has been in the same family since the 1940s after its purchase in an antique shop in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Condition: Very good. The metal shaft is slightly bent and there are dents in the metal tip.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
