    Description

Spectacular Buffalo Skinning Kit with Two Knives,Whetstone, and Bone Saw, in a soft tanned cowhide scabbard, very apparently made for presentation. a. The scabbard is stamped discreetly "Texas Steer" and "Tiffany & Co." b. The deluxe bone saw is 11" overall with an 8" blade in a tempered steel frame stamped "Richardson/Spring Steel/Newark NJ/Warranted." The stag horn handle bears a silver or nickel-silver escutcheon engraved "WE." c. and d. The two J. Russell-pattern skinning knives are virtually identical, 9" long with highly-polished 5" blades marked "Tiffany & Co/Makers New York." The stag horn grips are also fixed with the silver escutcheons engraved "WE." The outfit is completed with a 3 ½" carborundum whetstone in its own sleeve.

This skinning kit was featured on page 277 of R. L. Wilson's The Peacemakers (1992) and on page 114 of M. H. Cole's The Skinning Knife (1994). The consigner purchase this kit from Norm Flayderman who told him that it had been made for presentation to a buffalo runner - WE - whose stellar fame came later: Wyatt Earp. However, he makes no claims for it, and to date no evidence has been found to authenticate such an attribution. There is no question, though, that this is a special set of instruments, and so far we have found reference to no other buffalo runners with the initials "WE."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
