Most Unusual French Napoleonic 1st Empire Officer's Saber with Damascus Blade and Arabic Script Inlaid in Gold. The 33" curved blade retains 80% of the original Damascus steel pattern. Overall smooth and light gray with some areas of luster. Absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. On each side of the blade, 2" above the hilt, is a 4 1/2" panel inlaid in gold with Arabic script. Careful examination of the panels indicates that they are, in fact, each different. The all brass hilt in a typical French form with the langets, large quillon and pommel cap all exhibiting cast shell like decoration, the face and sides of the knuckle bow fluted. Hilt perfect with very nice untouched patina. Black checkered ebony grip also perfect. The all brass scabbard with round faced decorated ring mounts and scalloped drag is also perfect, with absolutely no dents, and very nice untouched patina. There is no throat and no signs the scabbard ever mounted one.

The French occupied Egypt and Syria between 1798 and 1801 and it is reasonable to assume that is the date and point of origin of at least the blade on this classic 1st Empire saber. Logically a translation of the gold inlaid panels will provide a fascinating insight into the sword's history. Superb condition and a most interesting and unusual Napoleonic saber.
