Description

Group of Five Exceptional Japanese Yanone With Chrysanthemum Openwork.

A finely forged steel arrowhead of the yanone type, worked in openwork (sukashi) with a chrysanthemum motif. The design is precisely pierced, evoking the imperial flower of Japan, long associated with longevity and renewal. Such arrowheads were not intended for use in battle but rather for ceremonial archery, shrine offerings, or as status symbols commissioned by high-ranking samurai and daimyo. The craftsmanship reflects techniques comparable to those of sword guards (tsuba), with careful attention to balance and symmetry. Examples of this type are preserved in major collections of Japanese arms and armor, where they are valued for their artistry and symbolism. The group has tips ranging in size from 2-inches to 3 ¼-inches and in overall length from 7 to 9 ½-inches. Three of the five are signed.

All examples in very good to excellent condition.
