Buffalo Runner's Miscellany, 1877 to ca. 1895. 1) Telescope made by "Thos. L. Amstay/London," leather-wrapped steel tube, in excellent condition with fine optics. It extends to 23-3/4" and is housed in a bull or buffalo hide case 24 ½" long and 2-3/4" in diameter. This is probably the spyglass noted as the "only telescope" ever to be shipped to Frank E. Conrad's Ft. Griffin store, the biggest source of Sharps rifles and hunting supplies on the southern plains. 2) Canvas Mills-style cartridge belt riveted to leather interior belt and harness for wearing over head and shoulders. 3) Conrad's store also provided necessities such as "J. G. Dill's/Best/Cut Plug" tobacco sold in hinged tins like this one, 3 ¼" x 4-3/8" x 1 ¼". 4) Much used pliers-type bullet mold marked "Colt's/Patent;" two cavities, one for bullet and one for ball. 5) Hand-made tool holster, contrived from a pewter loop (probably the top of a drinking mug) with the crude chased image of a steer head; stitched to a leather medallion suspended from a pair of brass belt hooks; about 3 ½" x 3 ¼"; an ingenious frontier solution inspired by necessity.
