Buffalo Hunter's Pair of Skinning Kits, from the Southern Plains, 1870s - 1880s. 1)First is a stitched leather holster, 9" x 2 ½" 3", with a belt loop and a 36" shoulder strap, and a complement of three butcher knives and sharpening steel. The first is a well-worn Sheffield, 10" with a 5 ¾" blade marked "I Wilson/Sycamore St." The second knife, 10" in length with 6" blade, has the highly unusual marking, "Association/1873." The third and largest knife is an unmarked Sheffield, 11" overall with 6" blade. The sharpening steel is 18" with bail and is marked "Lee's 2," (Landers Frary & Clark). 2) The second kit also has a shoulder belt, this one with four cast bronze "steer head" connectors and brass "snake" clasp. The pouch is a leather-wrapped wooden box 9" x 2" x 5 ½". There are seven knives: an unmarked spear point blade with tool handle and brass bolster, 10 ½" long; a 9 ½" skinning knife marked "I Wilson/Sycamore St/Sheffield"; an unmarked Sheffield skinning knife, 10 ½" in length; an unmarked straight butcher knife with a 3-rivet handle; a butcher/skinning knife marked on the 5-5/8 blade "Joseph Rodgers & Sons/V[crown]R" and with a crude "K" carved in the handle; next, a boning knife, 12 ¾" with a formidable 8" blade, unmarked, with pine handle replaced during its period of use; and, finally, a high-end 10" butcher knife marked "Worth/B.
