Buffalo Hide Grouping. 1) The star of this lot is the skinning kit contained in a two piece buffalo-skin-covered box with brass hinged handles. The top is 7 ½" high and lifts off. The bottom part is 11" tall and 5 ½" on a side. Within are slotted insets for a dozen knives and a sharpening steel. Highlights among the knives include an unmarked 16" Bowie-style butcher knife with cocobolo handle from the 1870s; a 9 ¼" hunting knife with ebony grips marked "C D Schaaf/Solingen; a 10" Dexter skinning knife, much used and very sharp with blade worn to ½"; a heavy hand-forged Bowie with ¼" spine; a Russell "Green River Works" butcher/skinning knife with period handle replacement; and seven more, along with a 16" sharpening steel marked "Lee's" (Landers, Frary & Clark) with a pewter bolster and lanyard ring. 2) It may also be argued that the star of this grouping is the iron-bound wooden canteen, 10 ½" in diameter and 4 ¾" deep, covered in buffalo hide. 3) Included also is a pair of buffalo gloves from the 1880s, wool lined, 12 ¾" in length and 8 ½" wide. d. Once plentiful but now scarce is a pair of buffalo horn caps from the period, 15" long.
