    Description

Buffalo Butcher's Splitting Cleaver. Surprisingly, this piece was never intended to be part of a Medieval armory. Just ¼" short of 4 feet long. The 9" blade is 7" deep and measures 16 ½" from the tip to the end of the tang. Two hand-forged iron bands bind the blade to the hardwood handle. The butt is stamped "UP" for Union Pacific. This unusual and spectacular tool is illustrated on page 211 of Gilbert, Remiger, and Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Buffalo Hunters and Skinners, volume 1.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
