Description
18th Century American Hand Forged Halberd. Blade 15" overall with 11 1/2" double edged spear point at top and cross piece with 2 1/2" axe head opposing 3 1/2" curved blade. Deep dark patina overall with scattered light to medium pitting and in some areas toward the bottom a bit heavier. There is a chip on the lower corner of the spear point that actually appears to be a forging flaw, and a small chip on the lower corner of the axe head. The piece is now mounted on a replaced wooden haft with replaced circular 2 3/8" iron guard. The side straps are 8 1/2" and exhibit heavy pitting. The side straps exhibit what is possibly and old repair on both sides where they join the head. Classic example of an American halberd from the Revolutionary War period or earlier and believed to be indigenous to Virginia.Auction Info
