Most Rare U. S. Marine Corps Non Commissioned Officer's Sword C. 1840. Although generally identified as being militia artillery sabers, an original and unique C. 1845 original watercolor proof of the Horstmann catalog C. 1845 pictures this exact sword and identifies it as being a U. S. Marine non-commissioned officer's sword. 25 1/2" curved blade generally smooth and gray but with one 4" area of surface rust with some pitting near the tip. Also a few other very small scattered areas of surface rust, minor. The blade is completely unmarked. The plain brass hilt with rudimentary eaglehead includes a D shaped guard which is pierced for a sword knot and exhibits a very nice totally untouched patina. The leather scabbard is very sound with just one crease near the throat but no cracks or breaks. Plain sheet brass throat with large oval frog stud. Sheet brass tip with a short wide finial. The scabbard is reinforced just above the lower mount, obviously during the period with a piece of sheet iron folded over onto the back of the scabbard. A very nice untouched example of this exceedingly rare American sword with but a handful of examples extant.
