Most Rare, Absolutely Authentic, Civil War M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword Presented to a Chaplain. 31" blade, diamond shaped in cross section, and overall near mint with just a few minor stains. With floral/scroll motifs with arms panoply in the center, on both sides. The obverse side of the blade bears a 4" etched panel, "SCHUYLER HARTLEY & GRAHAM / NEW-YORK" . Blade also marked in engraved script on the obverse ricasso, "Klingenthal" with a small proof/cartouche. The regulation style hilt with folding counterguard, with all decoration cast in very deep relief with superb detail, is inscribed in script on the face of the folding counterguard, "Presented to / B. Frank Whittemore, Chaplain / 53d Regt Mass. V. M. by his / Fitchburg friends". The hilt is overall about mint, retaining much of the original gilt. Sharkskin grip with brass wire wrap also perfect, with decoratively embossed brass ferrules at top and bottom. The acid brown scabbard with gilt mounts exhibits two minor, really negligible, dents, else perfect. Plain brass drag the narrow ring mounts with cast floral decoration. Superb overall condition although showing signs of minor but obvious use.

Benjamin Franklin Whittemore , a 38 year old clergyman, enlisted as Chaplain of the 53d Mass. Vols. on 12/13/62 and mustered out on 11/25/63 assuming the same position with the 30th Mass. Inf., finally mustering out on 7/5/66. Both units saw considerable service in the deep south The 53d moved to Fitchburg, Mass. in late August of 1863 where it was mustered out and likely when the sword was presented to Whittemore. A beautiful sword of unquestioned authenticity, and one of only a handful of examples extant.
