This presentation sword, engraved on the blade at the base of the hilt SOUVENIR DU CAPITAINE PITET A.F. A MR. LE MAJOR MCNARY U.S., 1918. Engraved on the other side of the blade, also at the base of the hilt MANUFACTURE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE CHATELLERAULT JANVIER 1919 OFF'ER D'INF'RIE MLE 1882. This sword was presented by French Army general staff officer Captain (Rene) Pitet, inventor of the Piet bayonet to Major (James Eugene) McNary, ordnance department of the U. S. Reserves in France, inventor of the Mark One 1918 trench knife. Note: Major James Eugene McNary of the AEF designed and patented a new trench warfare weapon, the famous Mark One, 1918 trench knife to correct the problems with the US Model 1917-18 Knuckle "knife". He also invented a protective armor for aviation pilots and other operators. It is interesting to note also that there was a J. T. [E?] McNary who was a Major in the 1st Corps Observation Group and was briefly in command of the 91st Aero Squadron (Army Observation), who could be the same Major McNary.

Condition: Good. Overall showing scattered signs of handling wear, some nicks to edge and patches of pitting. From the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, CA.
