Magnificent Quality, Superb Condition, Ivory Grip Civil War Officer's Presentation Grade Sword. 31" blade about mint. Etched for 2/3 its length with scrollwork, shield with US, American flag and spread wing eagle surmounted by riband and motto on the obverse. The reverse with similar motifs but with a large block U. S. Blade retains most of the original luster with just some very minor staining at the ricasso and the tip. Back of the blade etched "Iron Proof". The heavy basket features a full figured eagle in flight flanked by large U S all intertwined with leaves and berries and a snake whose head is being attacked by the eagle. The guard also exhibits deep relief scrollwork on the side near the quillon. The quillon itself is composed of a massive shell like hood over a ball mounted in deep relief scroll work. The interior of the guard is extensively engraved with scrollwork surrounding the grip. The guard is pierced for a knot at the top and exhibits scrollwork where it enters the pommel. The pommel utilizes an acorn finial capstan an is composed of deep relief scrollwork with the edge surrounded by leaves and berries and a full figured head of lady liberty with a star on the front of her cap. The one piece ivory grip is carved at the top and inlaid on the face with a full three dimensional female figure, arms crossed in front of her and surrounding by deep relief floral rosettes. A scroll like extension at the base extends all the way to the guard, with the figure covering the entire face of the grip. Grip with wonderful mellow patina and just one hairline age crack at the top but perfectly sound. The hilt overall retains 80% of the original gilt. The German silver scabbard and brass mounts are perfect. Scabbard engraved with two elaborate scroll panels between the ring mounts, armor and arms panoply including a small spread winged eagle surmounting an elaborate scroll engraved panel. A 4" knight in full armor holding a halberd is delicately and exquisitely engraved just above the lower mount. The brass throat with 1 1/4" scalloped extensions while the ring mounts exhibit elaborate floral motifs including a 3/8" high rose in the center of each. The mounts are also decorated with oak leaves and acorns on the back side. Scrollwork on the ring loops with the rings of heavy gauge twisted brass. The 6 1/2" lower mount with decorated scalloped edge at the top and deeply engraved with elaborate floral/leaf motif in the center. The heavy drag cast with elaborate shell like decoration. The scabbard itself is mint with absolutely no dents and the brass mounts retain 90% of the original gilt. A truly magnificent Civil War sword obviously meant for presentation to an important and high ranking officer.
