Large Silver Cutlery Handle Sheffield Bowie With Magnificent Etched Blade In Superb Condition C. 1850. 13 1/2" overall with 8 1/4" blade being 1 9/16" wide at the base. 5 1/2" two step false edge. Large, heavy cutlery handle in a rudimentary S shape, decorated with ribbing overlaid with deep relief leaves and scroll work. The scroll work terminating in curls that actually protrude from the grip. Rather wide heavy German silver cross guard also in a rudimentary S shape. The obverse of the blade is plain showing much original luster surface patina and some very light salt and peppering. Absolutely no rust or pitting and much of the surface patina could be easily hand cleaned/removed. The obverse of the blade exhibits hear the back, die stamped horizontally, "Manufactured / By W. & S. Butcher / Sheffield. The entire surface of the blade is covered with etched scroll work on a frosted background with a curved 3/8" riband in the center, "SELF PROTECTOR". Some scattered small spots of dark salt and peppering, primarily along the edge, retaining most of the original luster. Beautiful blade. The original back stitched brown leather scabbard displays incised line decoration at the edges and mounts a German silver tip which is perfect. The scabbard shows absolutely no signs of ever having mounted a throat. Scabbard in excellent sound supple condition with just some minor finish crackling and a few touches of flaking. Very nice. A very impressive knife for size, quality and condition.
