    Description

Large Navaja Folding Knife by Lamothe of New Orleans.
Circa second half 19th century. 9-3/4"?closed French-style navaja with 1/4"?thick serpentine clip point blade neatly marked Lamothe / N. Orleans. Stag handle scales with nickel silver shield and fileworked iron mounts. Ring pull lock release is a replacement. Blade a bit loose upon opening. Excellent.
A European design serving the same purpose as folding bowie knives, rarely found with New Orleans markings. This knife could be by Louis Lamothe, active in New Orleans c.1861-1894; Louis Lamothe Jr., c.1888-1904; Noel Lamothe, 1888-1910, or possibly other Lamothes in New Orleans.
Fro the Ex Jack Royse Collection.
