Large, Superb Condition C. 1850 Sheffield Bowie Knife By Corsan, Denton, Burdekin & Co. Being The Exact Knife Pictured Opposite P. 270 in "The Antique Bowie Knife Book". The knife is 16 1/2" overall with a 9 7/8" blade having a 2 7/8" clipped and 4 7/8" false edge. The condition of the blade overall is near mint with just a few tiny scratches along the edge and a few minor stains, most notably at the tip. The blade was possibly very carefully hand cleaned at some point, but beautifully done and has not resulted in any alteration. Marked on the reverse ricasso "Corsan, Denton (in an arc) / Burdekin & Co."The German silver guard is 1 1/8" from top to bottom and 2 1/2" wide. Composed of deep intricate scrollwork with the quillons terminating with scrolls. Perfect condition with very nice untouched patina. The 4 1/4" ebony grip is faceted on the corners and inlaid with three 3/8" mother of pearl discs, equally spaced, on the reverse face. The reverse face also exhibits a tiny age hairline with no loss that detracts nothing. The 1 1/4" German silver pommel is composed of a textured scrollwork base with a trapezoidal cap with deep line decoration. Also perfect condition with very nice untouched patina. The original brown Moroccan leather sheath mounts a German silver tip with a minor bend, and is decorated along the edges, front and back, with gilt embossing, along with a gilt embossed scroll in the center. German silver throat with round faced circular frog stud which mounts the original frog and belt loop. The belt loop with a 3" opening. Scabbard really excellent with just a few minor scuffs along the edge. the frog/belt loop is very sound but with about 50% flaking/scuffing. Obviously the set has always been together just as it is currently presented. An absolutely beautiful knife of desirable size and superb condition.
Estimate: $6,000 - up.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
