    Description

Grouping of Six Skinning and Butcher Knives, from the last decade of the buffalo hunt era (imported knives were required by U.S. law after 1891 to be marked with the name of the country of manufacture). 1) The first is a very sharp lightweight skinning knife marked "Woodworth" (made in western New York State) with a turned "broomstick" handle; 12-3/8". 2) Forged-steel butcher knife marked "I Wilson/Sycamore St/Sheffield, England," 10" in length with a 5-3/4" blade, minor corrosion at heel with a heavily worn handle. 3) Flat-steel 18" (!) butcher knife with light pitting overall. The hardwood handle shows a crack in the front 2" of the right plate. 4) Spear point 12" hunting knife made in Bridgeport, Connecticut; bone handle, broken at the butt, with nickel guard and fittings. This is a much-used blade, deeply pitted. 5) Flat blade spear point hunting knife marked "B.G.I. Co./Bridgeport Conn/No. 501," with scored hardwood handle and brass guard, 10-7/8" long. The Bridgeport Gun Implement Company marked several different styles of flat blade hunting knives No. 501." The two Bridgeport knives are together with a brass-tack decorated scabbard which was likely cut down from a larger scabbard during the period of use (1880s - 1890.) 6) This plain unmarked flat blade butcher/skinning knife has some rust and pitting but is very sharp. It is 10 ½" long with walnut handles secured by three rivets.
