Description

Cased Fine English Thomas Turner & Co. Suffolk Works Gentleman's Folding Knife. Containing: 2 1/2-inch main blade, 1 1/2-inch spear point, file, buttonhook, corkscrew, and awl. Ivory grips with escutcheon engraved to: SIR H.L. POLLOCK, BART. Scissor, toothpick, tweezers, and manicuring blade fitted into grip scales. Contained in red leather case with blue fitted interior.
Condition: Scattered wear and light pitting to blades. Grips with light dings and one noticeable crack. Case showing signs of wear from handling and storage.

David Mamet's Notes: This was at the bottom of my safe. I bought it several decades ago, but as the song has it, can't remember where or when. It may have been in the eighties at one of the old Armory Antiques shows where one could still find the Will and Fink, IXL, Rodgers, bowies and gamblers knives.

This fellow is the finest "Gentleman's Knife" I've ever seen. Four in. o.a.l., Ivory scales, escutcheon engraved, "Sir HL Pollock, Bart." 2 ½ in main, spear point blade, pen blade, buttonhook, corkscrew, awl, scissor, toothpick, tweezers, fitted into the scale, also, a nailfile, and a tortoiseshell contraption housing a small thin blade of unknown purpose. With a fitted morocco plush-lined case.

A better man than I would forsake t-shirt and jeans, and adopt cords, paddock boots, and a tweed jacket, if only to allow himself to slip this knife into the right-hand patch pocket. But I see I am turning into the J. Peterman Catalogue, and beg your forgiveness.

I recall an old ship's chandler on Commercial Street in Provincetown around 1960. There one still found; Lucifer matches in blocks, pea coats of various nations, marlinspikes, souwesters, and all things good. In Von Lengkerke and Antoine (Abercrombie and Fitch) on Chicago's Wabash Street of my youth the ground floor housed the knife department where one found Randall Knives (I bought my first one there in 1960), Scagel, and Morseth knives, the first and most celebrated of the American Custom Knife Makers. My original Randall Bird and Trout disappeared on a cross-country trip fifty years ago. My wife replaced it on our last Anniversary.

Also on my desk at this writing is a Tony Bose Camp Knife and this demands a differing scenario. In this I am flying to Idaho or somewhere in a Husky 180hp Bushplane. I have forsaken both my t-shirt and my tweeds for a flying jacket from Lostworlds in New York, and the Bose sheath knife rides behind my left hip for use on landing, in making tent pegs, stakes to tie down the plane, firetrees to start a fire in the light mist, and with which to signal passing airliners, should the need arise, by heliograph, "Good Luck digesting the in-flight meal." Knife must be seen to be appreciated.
