Inscribed Civil War U.S. M1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber. As pointed out in the introduction, while a very nice Civil War period US M1860 light cavalry officer's saber, we are of the opinion the inscription was added post period.

32" Klingenthal blade etched for 1/3 its length with floral, scroll and military motifs but no unique American motifs. Blade excellent with unstopped fuller and European proofs at base along with Klingenthal script on back. Generally bright and clean with just some scattered salt and peppering. Regulation style hilt with floral/scrollwork where branches join guard, where guard enters pommel, face of the pommel and deep relief shell like motif on quillon. White sharkskin grip excellent with a few worn spots, one small chip on the underside and excellent brass wire wrap. Steel scabbard with plain brass mounts excellent with the body showing deep dark patina and a dent on both sides 5" below the middle mount. Lower mount with a couple of very minor dents and nicks, showing considerable honest wear on the lower portion of the drag. Inscribed in script on the top mount "Lt. H. Holt / 1st Reg. Ms. Cav. / 1863." Again, while beautifully, executed and showing nice patina we are of the opinion the inscription was added post period.

Holt served in the 30th New York Inf. from 6/1/61 to 3/13/63, the 55th Mass. Inf. from 5/1663 to 10.14/63 and the 1st Mass. Cav. from 1/13/64 until 7/26/64. He subsequently served in the regular US Army in the 6th US Cav. until his death in 1867. Accompanied by complete set of records from all three units.
