Incredible Condition, Very Rare B. Douglas Variant of the H. Marshall Pattern Confederate Wooden Scabbard Cavalry Saber. 33 1/2" curved, rather heavy blade with unstopped fuller which terminates 1/2" from the guard and 7 1/2" from the tip. Blade with just a few tiny, negligible stains else perfect and untouched. Retains the original characteristic large thin serrated edge leather washer. Hilt perfect with rough cast recessed underside on the guard, rounded branches and small disc where the guard enters the pommel. Pommel with distinctive line separating the top from the lower portion of the cap. Mint leather wrapped grip with tight thin gauge twisted brass wire. Two piece wooden scabbard about perfect with an old coat of what may be original varnish. Large number 97 stamped between two upper mounts on both sides of the scabbard. There are two brass pins on either edge of the scabbard , evenly spaced between the middle and lower mount that apparently serve to reinforce the joining of the two scabbard halves. 4 1/4" sheet iron upper mount with brass throat fastened by rivets. 2" sheet iron middle mount. Both with iron ring mounts with unusual flat faceting where the actual ring loop attaches to the mount, iron carrying rings. The top mount is held in place by the throat rivets while the middle mount is friction fitted. 4 1/2" lower mount including iron drag, fastened with two small pins at top on both sides. All mounts perfect with dark untouched patina. A really incredible Confederate saber for both condition and rarity. Ex-Steve Hess Collection
