Great American Eaglehead Officer's Straight Sword C. 1800 with the Period Over the Shoulder Sling. Sword with 31 1/2" straight blade with shallow wide fuller extending to the tip. Decorated with fire blue, and gilt engraved motifs for one half its length. Obverse with arms panoplies and floral/scroll work, reverse with floral/scroll motifs and wonderful tucked wing primitive American eagle with riband and clouds with stars above. Blade retains 70% of the original fire blue mixing with patina, and 90% of the original gilt. Undecorated portion of the blade with just some staining and hints of luster. Hilt with stirrup shaped guard with single outward branch surrounding a diamond. Small piercing with ring near the pommel for the knot. Magnificent head with no back strap. The beautifully patinated checkered ivory grip with just a few small chips at the top else perfect with a decorative brass ferrule at the base. The entire hilt retains 90% of the original gold wash.
Scabbard with brass mounts, also retaining 90% of the original gilt, with just a few very minor dents on the lower mount. Top mount with ring and frog stud, middle mount with ring. Black leather body of the scabbard in good sound condition, although exhibiting an opening on a portion of the rear seam with no loss, some scattered flaking, and a couple of minor cracks. The period over the shoulder sling, we have no way of verifying it has always been used with this sword, is 2 3/8" wide with buff leather center section and scalloped red Moroccan leather edging with gilt embossed decoration. The sling is all there but there is a clean cut/break at the top, easily repaired. The sling shows wear and use with some darkening and staining to the buff center section and wear to the red decorative edging, again, however, very sound. The frog itself has a 2 1/2" opening at the top and 2" opening at the bottom. A wonderful early American officer's set certainly dating no later than 1800.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
