German Made Civil War Non-Regulation Officers' Sword. 32 ¾" slightly curved blade etched with floral scroll, a "U.S." and spread wing American eagle. Reverse ricasso maker marked "W. WALSCH / SOLINGEN". The guard is cut from a sheet of iron to resemble a half-basket hilt with two branches. In the area of the counter guard the obverse branches give way to a cut-out American eagle perched on the letters "U.S." and surmounted by a ribbon bearing the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The back strap extends to a dove's head pommel. The wood grip is lacking the leather covering but retains significant portions of the wire wrapping. The blade is mottled with dark spots and areas of pitting, otherwise in good condition.
