    Description

Generic Confederate Bayonet for Use with Sporting Rifle or Fowling Piece. Although none of these have surfaced with unquestionably Confederate provenance, it is known that the Confederacy produced bayonets of several forms, including a socket, for use with non military arms carried into service at the beginning of the war, as well as by home defense forces/ militia organizations in the latter stages of the war. This example would certainly seem to be a prime candidate. Entirely hand fashioned and of very fine professional quality. Definitely meant for use with a heavy caliber weapon and not a child's toy. 6 3/4" overall with 1 1/2" long socket with an approximately 3/4" inside diameter. Usual right angle mortise to fit over bayonet stud or front sight. The 5 1/2" single edge tapered blade is forged integral with the socket, rather than being two separate pieces, showing professional workmanship throughout with a 3" sharpened 'false edge'. Metal overall with deep age brown patina, and just some light surface rust with a few spots of very minor light pitting. Displays considerable professional effort and appears to be definitely designed to transition a civilian arm for military use.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
