For Both Form And Condition One Of The Finest Confederate "Dog River' Cavalry Sabers We've Ever Seen. 30 3/4" nearly straight blade rather heavy and wide with unstopped fuller that extends to within 1/2" of the hilt and 6" of the tip. Blade is about perfect with just smooth gray patina and absolutely no rust, pitting or edge nicks. Completely untouched as is the rest of the sword. Hilt with rather narrow, short quillon flat on both faces but with integrally cast ferrule at the base of the grip. Outboard branches slightly rounded with mould lines visible on the edges. The guard is absolutely flat where it enters the pommel. The pommel exhibits a couple of casting flaws and the seam, where the two halves are joined is prominently visible on the front. Leather grip wrapped with single strand copper exhibits the anomaly of having the numeral 5 stamped into the leather of both sides of the grip between each of the wire strands. Most unusual. Hilt overall about perfect with wonderful dark untouched patina. Iron scabbard with large iron throat brazed in place, very crudely cast brass ring mounts and drag with iron carrying rings. The cast brass drag, although unquestionably original, was improperly cut to fit the bottom of the scabbard with the space between the drag and the scabbard filled in with solder. Scabbard with very crude lap seam on the back edge and retains what appears to be 95% of an original coat of black paint. Just worn on the ring mounts and never applied to the drag. The sword overall in truly superb untouched condition, and certainly one of the most unusual and interesting examples of a 'Dog River' Confederate cavalry saber we've ever seen.
