Fine Civil War U.S. M1840 Light Artillery Saber with Inscription. As pointed out in the introduction, while this is a fine Civil war period M1840 saber, we are of the opinion the inscription was added post period.

Saber overall near mint. Blade bright and clean with most of the original luster and just a couple of very minor nicks. Marked on the obverse ricasso "US / A. D. K. / 1861 and on the reverse with traces of Ames scroll logo. retains the original leather washer. Hilt also about perfect, with just some scattered light/dins on the guard, commensurate with honest use and a nice light patina. Leather grip and wire wrap perfect. Scabbard also near perfect with nice light patina, some minor scattered stains, with no rust, pitting or dents. Throat missing screw else complete. Nicely inscribed in script between the scabbard mounts on the reverse "Corpl. A. A. Brown / 1st N. H. Artillery". Inscription shows nice patina but we are of the opinion it was added post period.

Brown enlisted in the 1st N. H. on Sept. 26, 1861 and mustered out Sept. 26, 1864. he was captured at 2nd Bull Run on Aug. 30, 1862 and returned Dec. 9, 1862. Batteries A and B of the the 1st N. H. Heavy Arty became the 1st Light Battery. An exceptional M1840 Light Artillery saber with very desirable date. Accompanied by complete set of records.
