Exceptionally Nice Pre Civil War M1840 Light Artillery Saber By Ames. Excellent blade with smooth gray patina and just one very small area of salt and peppering near the tip on the reverse. Very nicely marked with US/WD and Ames Mfg. Co. / Cabotville / 1849. Configured with the recess under the guard that allows the insertion of the scabbard. Hilt with leather grip and twisted brass wire about perfect, the brass with nice untouched patina. Scabbard also near perfect with smooth dark patina and absolutely no dents. Just one tiny spot (1/4") of very light pitting near the throat. The scabbard is, of course configured without an actual throat to fit into the underside of the guard. Exceptionally nice example of a rather scarce early M1840 artillery saber.
