Exceptional Untouched Condition, Unusual Form US M1840 Cavalry Officer's Saber By Horstmann With Gold Decorated Blade. The only example of this particular form we've ever seen. 35" slightly curved blade, untouched and bright and clean overall with much luster and absolutely no rust, pitting or edge nicks and just a few minor stains near the tip. Decorated with 6 1/2" panel on the obverse with spread wing eagle and shield over clouds surrounded by rays and highlighted with gold wash of which it retains about 50%. The Horstmann logo, "W. H. / Horstmann & Sons / Philadelphia" is hand engraved in block letters at the base of the blade with crowned head on the ricasso. The reverse decorated with a similar size panel with large seraphed US flanked by elaborate scroll/floral also retaining 50% of the original gold washed highlights. "Iron Proof" hand engraved at the base of the blade. The blade retains the original leather washer. Regulation style hilt with cast decoration on both the inside and outside of the branches, deep relief scrollwork on the quillon and scrollwork and floral rosette where the guard enters the pommel which is surprisingly undecorated. Hilt retains 20% of the original gold wash. Again, uniquely the grip appears to be of black highly polished horn and is perfect retaining the tight twisted brass wire. The sword retains the original officer's style leather sword knot in fine supple complete condition with perfect tassels and adjusting knot fabricated of woven cord. Scabbard retains most of the original brown finish mixing with smooth dark patina. Absolutely no dents with the three brass mounts exhibiting nice untouched patina and about perfect. A most unusual and desirable cavalry officer's saber and absolutely unique in our experience.
