Exceptional Horstmann Civil War M1860 Light Cavalry Officer's Saber. 31 1/2" curved blade retains most of the original luster and is profusely white etched for 2/3 its length. The obverse with extensive scrollwork, arms panoplies and stands of flags, all highlighted with hand engraving. Maker's logo at the base of the blade "W. H. Horstmann/& Sons/Philadelphia". The reverse of the blade with similar superbly detailed etching. The back of the blade is etched with a leaf/vine motif. Absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks, and just some minor scattered stains. The blade retains the original blue wool washer. The regulation style hilt retains 90% of the bright gilt with cast leaf decoration on the inboard and outboard faces of the branches, and deep laurel leaf decoration on the pommel cap face. Sharkskin grip with triple wire wrap mint. As is typical of these Horstmann sabers, the scabbard is plain, but with decoratively scalloped drag. Absolutely no rust, pitting, dents or nicks with very pleasing smooth gray patina. A really choice example of this very popular form of Civil War Cavalry officer's saber.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
