Exceptional Condition, Civil War, Non-Regulation, German Silver Hilt, US Non Regulation Foot/Staff & Field Officer's Sword. 32" straight blade about mint. Obverse with scroll etched panel at the base with a 9" panel in the center with large spread wing eagle perched on arms trophies, with riband and hand engraved motto flanked on both sides by intricate vine motifs. Small brass disc marked "Proved" inlaid on the ricasso. The reverse etching very similar but with a large, very elaborately decorated block US in the center panel. All decoration highlighted with hand engraving and a step higher than normally encountered on these swords/Retains the original red wool washer. The all German silver hilt pierced in the basket with large spread wing eagle with shield on breast, riband and motto below and perched on large block US. "Iron Proof" etched on the back of the blade. Two outboard branches decorated with fluted edges. Reverse of the hilt with large pierced counterguard attached to a branch. The guard pierced at the top for a sword knot and dramatically more elaborate and larger overall than normally encountered on this form. Pommel with stepped/fluted decoration and full backstrap. Sharkskin grip shows some minor honest wear with tight triple wire wrap and a 3/8" embossed decorative ferrule at the base. Steel scabbard with stepped throat affixed by two screws. Scabbard overall with no rust, pitting or dents. Generally smooth and clean to light gray with just one area on the lower section with some really negligible salt and peppering. A really superb example of this very popular Civil War officer's sword with a magnificent blade, and a more substantial size than normally encountered.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
