British Naval Dirk C. 1812 Exhibiting Some Of The Most Exquisite Workmanship We've Ever Seen. 17 1/2" overall with 13" curved, unadorned flat blade with 5 1/8" false edge. Blade generally smooth and gray with some scattered areas of salt and peppering and a few areas of very light pitting. Absolutely no edge nicks. The S shaped cross guard with heart shaped piercings surrounded by delicate engraving on the top. Large oak leaf langets with exquisitely cast detail, really superb. Lion head pommel with the lion's fur extending 2" down the full backstrap. One piece ivory grip with carved decoration and very nice mellow patina. Just a couple of minor age hairlines, none affecting soundness. The hit retains 90% of the original gold wash overall. The bras scabbard is absolutely stunning. The face of the scabbard fully and deeply engraved with leaf and acorn motifs along with scrollwork and a central panel bounded by 1/4" wide decorated bands featuring floral, geometric and scroll motifs. The scabbard includes a rudimentary drag. The reverse of the scabbard has a 1" X 1 1/16" blank panel at the top with scroll engraving at top and bottom, a central 3 1/2" panel with scroll/leaf engraving with oval floral rosette and 4" panel at the bottom also with floral/leaf engraving. The scabbard is overall about mint, retaining 95% of the original gold wash and truly a work of art. A brass chain with delicate links is attached at one ring mount with a sliding, heavy, cast lion head disc and snap swivel attached to the other carrying ring. An absolutely magnificent British naval dirk likely from the period of the War of 1812.
