Composite 19th Century Dirk with Prince of Wales Heraldic Badge. 12 1/2-inch slightly curved, polished steel blade of diamond section. Consignor's inventory numerals 133 in white at ricasso. One-piece varnished hardwood grip with waisted center flaring slightly at either end. German silver opal escutcheon engraved with family crest of crown and feathers. Riband marked, "ICH / DIEN." All within fine wreath border.

The badge is thought to have originated with Edward, The Black Prince, the eldest son of Edward III of England. According to legend, the Black Prince obtained this coat of arms from John I of Bohemia, against whom he fought in the Battle of Crecy in 1346. He took the dead king's helmet lined with ostrich feathers. The feathers and the dead king's motto became the prince's new badge. The Welsh archers were a key to the victory. His use of the German motto, "Ich Dien" which means "I Serve" is similar to the Welsh "Eich Dyn" meaning "Your Man" which would have helped endear the young Black Prince to the Welsh soldiers.
Condition: Good as configured. Blade cleaned showing scattered pitting and a flaw near base and possibly with later grip. Tip has been rounded. Grip very good retaining much of the varnish and with scattered dents and light handling wear.
