Civil War U.S. M1850 Foot Officer's Sword with Inscription. As noted in the introduction, while this is a fine, absolutely authentic, Civil War sword, we are of the opinion the inscription was applied post period.

Regulation M1850 foot officer's sword by Horstmann. 31" blade excellent, near mint, with standard Horstmann etch including floral/scrollwork, arms panoplies and spread wing eagle with motto on obverse, and similar etch with large US on reverse. It is marked on the reverse ricasso "HORSTMANN / & SON / PHILADELPHIA. Blade shows just the slightest wear with one tiny, really negligible, patch of very light pitting. Regulation style hilt about perfect, retaining traces of the original gilt, with the sharkskin and brass wire wrapped grip near perfect, just one tiny worn spot.

Blued steel scabbard near perfect with no dents retaining most of the original finish and just a few small areas of very light surface rust, no dents. Plain brass mounts excellent, the lower mount just showing some scattered light dents/dings. Inscribed horizontally in block letters on the top mount "PRESENTED To / CAPT. D. L. BROWN / 13Th MS. INF. / BY THE MEN OF / CO. H". Again we believe the inscription to be post Civil War period. Accompanied by complete set of records.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
