Pierce 21st Maine Inf. 30" blade etched for 2/3 its length with floral/scrollwork, arms panoplies and spread wing eagle with motto above on obverse. Similar etching with large US on the reverse. Blade generally smooth and dark with no pitting, some old surface rust and just one small nick. Etch dark but entirely visible. Regulation hilt about perfect with traces of gilt, quillon just turned down slightly. Sharkskin grip with wire wrap excellent just a small space from shrinkage on the back side. Leather scabbard with plain brass mounts, retaining traces of gilt, inscribed horizontally on the top mount "Lieut W. H. Pierc (e) e actually missing / Co. E. 21st Me." The upper 3/4 of the brown leather scabbard is fine and sound with an old repair to a break abut 3" above the lower mount, along with some flaking. Lower mount also with a few light dents.

Pierce enlisted in the 21st Maine Vol. Inf. on 10/13/62 as 1st Lieut. and mustered out 8/25/65 with the regiment. During his term of service the regiment was engaged at Port Hudson suffering 25 men killed and mortally wounded. The sword overall completely untouched and a nice totally honest inscribed Civil War officer's sword.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
