Civil War Presentation U.S. M1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword. Regulation form, the 28" straight blade generally exhibits deep dark patina with some scattered salt and peppering and a few small areas of very light pitting. Just traces of the etch remain. Brass regulation hilt with separately affixed old English silver letters MS, about perfect with dark untouched patina. The scabbard with deep dark patina overall, the top two mounts about perfect and conforming to regulation while the bottom mount is an incorrect replacement. Some scattered dents on the back portion of the scabbard and a bend, easily restored, about 3" up from the tip, no cracks or breaks. The sword is inscribed in script on the back of the scabbard between the two mounts "To Brigade Surgeon E. D. Dailey U. S. V. / As a testimonial of Confidence and Esteem / From his friends of Smyrna, Del. May 6, 1862". Edward Dymock Dailey was commissioned on 4/4/62 into US Volunteers Medical Staff and was discharged 10/15/1863. Obviously deserving of further research and very readily restorable.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
