    C. 1875 E. Gaylord US M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword Very rare and the only example we've ever seen, in overall about mint condition. Gaylord produced swords for only a short period of time until their sword making operation was bought out by Ames. This example is clearly quite early, with the 28 1/2" blade diamond shaped in cross section. Etched for over half its length with floral/scroll work on both sides, with American eagle on obverse, and the letters W. C. the central theme on the reverse. Likely a cadet organization. The obverse also bears the etched Gaylord logo, "Gaylord Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass" at the base. The blade has a few tiny stains near the tip else absolutely mint. The hilt retains 100% of the original gilt with regulation form obverse counterguard with eagle etc. All decoration in finely executed deep relief, including eagle on obverse face of pommel. The reverse of the guard utilizes a turned up 'thumbpiece'. Leather grip with heavy single strand brass wire wrap, mint, as is the hilt overall. Leather scabbard with brass mounts also about mint. The mounts retain 99% of the original gilt with the top mount utilizing a 1 1/2" frog stud. Scabbard with two small finish cracks else mint. A very rare American sword in truly superb condition.
