Description

C. 1815 Unusual American Militia Mounted Officer's Saber. 30", 1 3/8" wide curved blade etched for over one half its length. The sword is all iron mounted. Wonderful blade etch with arms panoplies, floral/scroll work along with indian head with head dress and primitive American eagle with motto above and shield on breast, on the obverse. Completely different floral/scroll motifs and arms panoply with full standing liberty with pole and liberty cap on reverse. Blade excellent with some original luster and just some scattered spotting/staining. One noteworthy nick about 10" from the tip but absolutely no rust or pitting. The plain iron guard with shield shaped langets, heavy faceted reverse P guard with disc quillon. Birdhead pommel with full backstrap. Light colored sharkskin grip with wire wrap about perfect, wire just a bit loose at the top. 3/8" ferrule at the base. Guard slotted for sword knot where it enters the pommel. An unusual saber with an exceptional blade etch in desirable condition.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
