    Description

Buffalo Hunter Owned Accessories. The three "luxury" items here make up a celebrity grouping. 1) First is a pewter flask with screw top, 6" tall, and engraved "James H Cator/1873/Dodge City." Cator was a relatively well-heeled English lad who came to the states in 1871 with his older brother. Together they made their marks as buffalo hunters and then as merchants and community builders. In 1873 in Dodge City, Kansas, Jim Cator turned 21. 2) Next is a glass brandy flask, covered in a basket-weave wicker, with a threaded tin cup/cap. The flask is 7-5/8" high. The cup (cap) is 2" high and 2" in diameter. Stamped on its bottom is the French patent mark abbreviation: "Brevete S. G. D. G." "E. D." has stamped his initials separately. E.D. is Emanuel Dubbs, Ohio-born buffalo hunter in the 1870s who later helped establish (and became the first judge in) Wheeler County in the Texas Panhandle. 3) This soft extravagantly-tooled leather trifold wallet (4" x 8" closed; 8" x 11 ¼" open) was the property of Charles Rath, one of the most successful of the suppliers to the buffalo hunters and a partner in the greatest of all the Texas Panhandle trading posts, Conrad & Rath. The consignor collected the stories of all three of these pieces when he acquired them.
