    Description

American Eaglehead Officer's Straight Sword By F. W. Widman Phila. C. 1830 29 1/2" straight blade decorated for half its length with fireblue and gilt highlighted engraved decoration. Marked at the base of the blade on the obverse with Large "W" presumably representing Widman. Fireblue panels on both sides terminate in scrolls and retains 90% of the brilliant fire blue and gilt. The balance of the blade with some scattered staining but absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. The blade retains a very thick leather washer that appears to be period. The hilt with scroll and floral decorated knucklebow, thickening with scrollwork where it enters the slender eaglehead. Grip tightly wrapped with very narrow gauge twisted copper wire, with 5/8" grapevine ferrule at the base. Hilt overall about perfect with nice untouched patina and very tight. Black leather scabbard with plain brass mounts utilizing two carrying rings and frog stud. Scabbard in very sound condition with what is possibly an old repair to a crack with no loss 3" up from the lower mount, barely detectable. Overall another nice representative example of a sword by this desirable and iconic maker.
