    Description

    Alexander Monro (secundus) Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 8.8"; Edinburgh; March 12, 1788. A letter to James Cadmichael, surgeon at Port Glasgow, regarding care for a patient. In part: "Her diet ought to be light & cooling. All violent exertion is to be avoided & nursing would be too fatiguing for her. If re spitting of blood should return, after draining a cupfull of blood from the arm, let her return to the use of the cooling medicines you mention." With integral address leaf attached.

    Alexander Monro (1733-1817) was a Scottish anatomist and physician referred to as secundus to distinguish him as the second of three generations of physicians. He described the foramen of Monro and the lymphatic system.

    Condition: Gently toned. The pages of the bifolium are affixed at two spots, top and bottom, with wax. Heavy soiling to address panels, with loss of paper where seal was removed. A previous collector has written Monro's name in pencil on the verso. Two spots of staining from showthrough where the pages are attached with wax. Single stray stain from ink.
