    Description

Absolutely Magnificent C. 1805 Napoleonic Period British Officer's Saber by S. Brunn.
Unquestionably the finest British Napoleonic period sword we've ever catalogued. 34 1/2" overall with deeply curved 29 1/2" flat blade. The blade is decorated on both sides, to within 4 1/4" of the tip, with a fire blue and gilt floral and geometric pattern. The leaf clusters at both edges of the blade are also highlighted with engraving. Blade overall near mint with just some minor darkening near the tip and some minor wear to the decoration from the sword being drawn and sheathed. Really stunning. The unique hilt is of polished steel with gilt brass decoration. Finely checkered ebony grip with three brass floral rosettes on each side. The flattened pommel with capstan is fluted on the top, and decorated with an embossed brass band at the bottom edge. The face of the line decorated backstrap is decorated with a brass overlay at the top, with a fluted steel ferrule at the base. Faceted stirrup shaped knuckle bow decorated with scroll brass overlay at the base. The cross guard is configured to resemble a fasces wrapped with a ribbon and terminates in an acorn finial. fluted triangular shaped langets which also terminate in an acorn. Above each langet, on the guard is a brass inlay, with a spread wing eagle on arrows on the obverse, and a sprig of oak leaves tied with a ribbon on the reverse. The sword retains what appears to be the original gold bullion sword knot with red highlights. Hilt overall about mint with just some small areas of brown patina.
The equally magnificent scabbard is fabricated of wood covered with black patent leather. The mounts are of textured gilt brass. The upper mount/throat being
7", the middle mount 5 1/4" and the lower mount 11". There is a laurel wreath at the throat and all mounts are edged with laurel leaves/berries and incorporate two piercings on the two upper mounts, and five piercings on the lower mount. All mounts are configured identically on both front and back. The ring mounts are of polished steel with an identical steel band fitted to the lower mount. The bottom of the lower mount is overlaid with a deep relief scroll/leaf border while the actual drag is of polished steel with brass scroll overlays at each end adjacent to the lined disc finials. Engraved in a panel on the obverse of the throat, "S. Brunn / Sword Cutler / To H. R. H. the / Prince of Wales / 56 / Charing Crofs / London". Scabbard also near perfect with just some scuffs on the leather finish and a hairline crack on the lower mount with no loss, very minor. All mounts retain 99% of the original gilt. A truly stunning saber from the Napoleonic period with, based on the maker, the latest possible date of manufacture being 1811. A significant addition to even the most sophisticated Napoleonic, or British sword, collection.
