    Description

Absolutely Authentic Civil War Inscribed M1840 Non Commissioned Officer's Sword. One very minor dent at the top on the side of the throat, and the rear lobe of the guard has been slightly bent up, obviously during the period of use, else the sword is overall absolutely mint. Marked on the obverse ricasso "US / T.K.L. / 1864" and on the reverse with Ames scroll logo. Inscribed in script on the top of the front lobe of the guard, "Sergt. J. L. Allen / Co. D 7th Ct. Inf. / June 16, 1864." Guard overall with very nice untouched patina.

Allen has a fascinating history as related to this sword. James S. Allen enlisted in the 7th Conn. Vols. on 9/5/61 and re-enlisted on 12/22/63. He was promoted to Corporal 3/18/64 and Sergeant 6/16/64 the date inscribed on this sword. He was wounded in the neck and shoulder the next day, 6/17/64, at Bermuda Hundred and died of those wounds on 7/12/64, with this sequence of events likely explaining the superb condition of the sword. Beautiful sword with a remarkable history.
