First edition, limited to 155 copies of which this is number 39, and signed by the author in the first volume. Four volumes; octavo. [iv], [1]-[612]; [651]; [ii], [1]-[608]; [671] pages; inserted frontispiece portraits and numerous illustrations, maps and plans throughout. Publisher's deluxe binding of reddish-orange levant morocco, gilt central armorial stamp of Marlborough's coat of arms on front boards, spines lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands; top edge gilt, others uncut; marbled endleaves. Spines toned, binding somewhat worn and soiled. Several hinges starting, text toned with some occasional foxing. A few pages unopened. About very good. The only signed, limited edition published in Churchill's lifetime, it took him ten years to research and write it. Woods A40(a).
