    Rare First Colonial Edition

Winston L. Spencer Churchill. The Story of the Malakand Field Force. An Episode of Frontier War. London and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1898. Colonial issue of the first edition. Octavo. 336 pages. Photograph of Major-General Sir Bindon Blood used as frontispiece. Six maps, some folding and colored. Errata sheet. Pictorial grey cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Spine darkened with modest shelf wear to the edges of the boards. Text block toned at the edges. Former owner's bookplate on the front free endpaper. Frontispiece tissue guard loose. A very good copy. This edition was intended for sale in the Colonies and used the same printing plates as the first home issue (less the publisher's catalog bound in back). Thus it includes all the same errors and points as the first issue. It is believed that only 1100 were issued cloth bound.
