    With Seventy-Two Magnificent Plates

Sir John Froissart and H. N. Humphreys. Chronicles of England, France, Spain and the Adjoining Countries from the Reign of Edward II to the Coronation on Henry IV. London: William Smith, 1839. The Thomas Johnes translation, to which are added a Life of the Author, an Essay on his Works, and a Criticism on his History. [Together with]: Illuminated Illustrations of Froissart Selected from the Ms. in the Bibliotheque Royale, Paris, and from Other Sources. London: William Smith, 1844, [Together with]: Illuminated Illustrations of Froissart, selected from the Ms. in the British Museum. London: William Smith, 1844. Together, four quarto volumes. Each work with an illuminated title as well as a printed title. Illustrated with seventy-two magnificent full-page, hand-colored plates, many heightened with gold. In this set, the Humphreys plates are interfiled with the text so that they appear next to their subject matter in the Chronicles. Each color plate has one or two explanatory pages by Humphreys. Complementing these are 116 text woodcuts with brief explanations in the contents pages. Uniformly bound in luxurious three-quarter green morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, by Wood. Spines with raised bands and richly gilt in compartments. All edges gilt. Spines uniformly sunned to brown, some minor rubbing, light occasional foxing in text. Still, a fine clean set incorporating the first editions of the plate volumes. The interleaving of the plates with the text makes for a beautiful and informative read, giving a fascinating medieval pictorial interpretation to the events described. A superb collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
