    Description

An Excellent Early Account of the Ottoman Empire

Sir Henry Blount. A Voyage into the Levant. A Breife Relation of a Journey, lately performed by Master H.B. Gentleman, from England by the way of Venice, into Dalmatia, Sclavonia, Bosnah, Hungary, Macedonia, Thessaly, Thrace, Rhodes and Egypt, unto Gran Cairo: With particular observations concerning the modern condition of the Turkes, and other people under that Empire. The Second Edition. London: Printed for I.L. for Andrew Crooke, ... 1636. Second edition, with the first edition appearing earlier the same year. Quarto. 126 pages. Old, likely early 19th-century, mottled calf with a double gilt rule on the covers, spine gilt extra in compartments with five raised bands, two red morocco letting labels stamped in gilt, board edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Front board cleanly detached (and front free endpaper nearly detached), previous owner's ink note to title identifying author (who signed in print in the rear), sheets clean and supple, with only minor foxing or soiling (heavier on page 11), and a few ink notations, trimmed close to text in places and affecting the top rule above the running title. First letter on the title page did not, alas, escape the overzealous binder and trimmer, losing its top. A very attractive copy and a good candidate for professional restoration. From the collection of a gentleman of New York.
