    Holinshed's Massive Chronicle of England, Scotland and Ireland

    Raphael Holinshed. The firste volume of the Chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande... London: Imprinted [by Henry Bynneman] for Lucas Harrison, 1577. Early edition, volume one only, one of four imprint variations from the first year of the book's printing. Folio. [2], 124 [i.e. 126], [1] leaves; 289, [1] pages; [8], 22 pages; 518, [26] pages; [2], 28 leaves; 115, [7] pages. First three preliminary leaves missing, including the general title page. One leaf missing in the Scotland section (perhaps a blank?). Final blank missing. Later suede binding with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Significant wear to the binding. Both boards detached. First two blanks partially detached; rear free endpaper detached. Bookplate and contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown. Scattered soiling and foxing to text. Later gift notation to first page of text. Some small chips and marginal paper loss to some leaves. Overall, a fair copy of a desirable historical rarity. Sold with all faults. STC 13568.
